To be eligible for the FPD program, the horse must be registered with the ApHC. This option may also be done concurrently with an application for registration. A horse must also meet the following criteria:
1. Beginning in 2009, then every ten years thereafter, the minimum percentage of eligibility will increase incrementally by requiring one additional horse in the preceding four generations of the applicant horse to be registered with the ApHC; that is, 23 out of 30 beginning in 2009, then 24 out of 30 beginning in 2019, and so on.

2. There must be a minimum of three (3) of these ancestors on both sire and dam sides of the pedigree.
3. Any and all ‘F’- numbered horses within the preceding four (4) generations of the applicant horse’s pedigree are to be considered 100% for FPD registration purposes,
regardless of the parentage of those ‘F’ numbered horses.
4. Horses may enter the FPD program at the percentage level requirements that were in place at the time of their birth.

Pour être éligible FPD, un cheval doit donc

• Etre inscrit à l'APHC

• Avoir au moins 3 ancêtres appaloosas du coté du père et de la mère (cad du coté père, il doit y avoir 3 appaloosas enregistrés, père compris, pareil du coté de la mère)

• Les appaloosas fondateurs (dont le numéro d'enregistrement APHC commence par F), sont considérés comme des appaloosas 100%, sans se préoccuper de leurs ancêtres.

• Avoir un certain nombre d'ancêtres inscrit à l'APHC sur les 4 dernières générations (le cheval représentant la 5ème), ce nombre augmentant avec les années. L'année retenue pour vérifier l'éligibilité est celle de naissance, pas celle de l'inscription.
  Au lancement du programme, il suffisait d'avoir 50% (soit 15 ancêtres sur 30) pour bénéficier du label FPD. Pour les chevaux nés jusqu'en 2008, il fallait 73% (22 ancêtres sur 30). De 2009 à 2019, il en faut 23 des ancêtres, et ça augmente d'un ancêtre tous les 10 ans, ce qui veut dire qu'en 2079 il faudra les 30 ancêtre (et donc être 100%) pour être éligible.
